Moving Out of Student Accommodation – As the university winds down for the Summer, it’s time for you to start preparing to move out of your accommodation. Whether you’re returning home, travelling, or gearing up for a new student house in September, making sure your current accommodation is left clean, and tidy is essential.
While moving out can feel like a daunting task, with the right planning it doesn’t have to be stressful. At Student Rooms 4 U, we aim to make the process as straightforward as possible for our tenants, especially with perks like no deposits, no admin fees, and no hidden charges.
To help you wrap up the year with confidence, here’s a practical guide to your end-of-tenancy prep.
1. Start Early and Make a Plan
Leaving everything to the last minute is a guaranteed way to turn moving out into a headache. Instead, break the process down into smaller tasks and spread them out over your final couple of weeks.
To-do list examples:
- Begin packing up non-essential items early.
- Sort through clothes, books, and kitchen items you no longer need.
- Schedule your final food shops to avoid waste.
- Agree on a cleaning rota with your housemates (if applicable).
A little forward planning will save you time and hassle when it comes to your final week.
2. Declutter Before You Pack
Don’t take things home just for the sake of it. If you haven’t used it all year, you probably don’t need it. Decluttering now will make packing quicker and lighter.
Donate or recycle:
- Old clothes or unused kitchenware can be taken to the local charity shops.
- Many student unions or local organisations offer end-of-term collection points.
- Recycle papers, plastics, and broken items responsibly.
Plymouth City Council’s website has details on local recycling points and waste tips: plymouth.gov.uk/recycling
3. Give Your Room a Proper Clean
Although Student Rooms 4 U doesn’t take a deposit, we still ask that properties be returned to a reasonable and clean condition for the next tenant. A good clean will also help avoid any potential charges for damages or excessive mess.
Cleaning checklist:
- Dust all surfaces, including shelves and skirting boards.
- Wipe down mirrors and windows.
- Vacuum the carpet or mop floors.
- Empty and clean your wardrobe and desk drawers.
- Remove any posters, hooks or temporary décor and make sure you don’t leave any marks.
- Clean the inside of any appliances you used, such as the kettle or microwave.
If you’re in a shared house, work together to clean communal areas like the kitchen and bathroom. A fair division of labour will get the job done faster and avoid friction.
4. Fridge and Freezer Etiquette
The fridge and freezer are often the last areas to be cleared, but don’t leave it too late.
- Start using up frozen food in the final couple of weeks.
- Defrost and wipe down the freezer a day or two before moving out.
- Throw away expired food and clean the shelves with warm soapy water.
Make sure everything is emptied before you leave. Food waste should never be left behind.
5. Take Meter Readings (If Applicable)
If your student accommodation provider asks you to manage your utilities, make sure you:
- Take final gas, electricity, and water readings.
- Submit them to your suppliers.
- Ensure the final bills are settled and shared fairly among housemates.
If you live in a Student Rooms 4 U all-inclusive property, you won’t need to worry about this, your utilities are already covered.
6. Final Checks Before You Leave
Before handing back the keys, take a moment to walk through the property and check for any forgotten items or last-minute jobs.
Checklist:
- All personal belongings removed.
- Bins emptied and rubbish taken out.
- Keys returned as instructed.
- Windows and doors are securely locked.
- Appliances switched off and lights turned off.
If you’re unsure about anything, contact our Student Rooms 4 U team. Someone is always available during the week to help answer your questions.
