Now Christmas is out of the way, it’s time to count the cost of all those mince pies and extra helpings of Christmas pudding. If you feel your clothes have shrunk a bit in the wash (especially around the waist region), it’s probably worth considering doing something to shed those extra pounds and keep fit.

However, losing weight at university is rather difficult for the average student. Your studies (and social life) should be the most important thing to you, not eating the right amount of apples a day.

Fortunately, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. There are multiple ways you could lose weight without even really trying. Some of these techniques and exercises are just plain fun. That makes them a fantastic option for anyone who shivers at the sight of a gym. Let’s find out how you too can shed those pounds, no matter how weird the instructions are.

Fitness apps

The modern age has given us fast cars, smartphones and something we always wanted – fitness apps. If you own an iPhone or an Android, then you probably know how these apps work already. They track all sorts of things when you’re exercising such as steps walked and distance travelled, and if you connect your phone to some wearable tech such as a FitBit or Smart Watch you can also record your heart rate.

There are quite a few apps available, but one in particular which has an exciting and very novel approach to ‘going for a run’ is Zombies, Run! It places you in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and uses your location to provide a dynamic, atmospheric storyline which you run along to.

Think you could never run 5K? You might want to rethink that when a horde of the undead are chasing you! Best played as the sun is going down when no-one else is around, just to guarantee you break out in a sweat.

Pole dancing classes

There is at least one person at a party that tries to dance around a pole – and fails miserably while doing so. But, why not make it a fun way to keep fit?

Pole dancing requires you to have endurance and can really help to develop and tighten your muscles. If you want the perfect body, pole dancing might just be the thing which helps you attain it.

The masters of hula-hooping may still be in pre-school, but you can join them and start losing weight immediately. This is an exercise that burns around 600 calories per hour, which is more than enough to lose a pound a week. In addition to that, it is a fun activity you can do almost anywhere – at home, in the backyard, even at a party. If you get really good at it you can always audition for “Britain’s Got Talent” as well!

Clean yourself thin

This is a fantastic way to keep yourself organized and fit as well. Mopping the floors burns a lot more calories than you might think. Cleaning the bathroom also isn’t for the faint-hearted. So, grab a rag and start shedding those pounds. In no time, you will be sweating like you have never sweated before. Not only will you start to lose those extra inches around your waist, your housemates will love you for it – a guaranteed way to be both fit and popular!
