Mel was a much loved and respected member of the University staff who sadly passed away in 2018. Mel’s family have launched this award to celebrate Mel’s passion for Plymouth and its inspiring and passionate students.

The Mel Joyner award will support students at the University of Plymouth from a ‘widening participation’ background. To be eligible you must come from a widening participation background and be making a contribution to University Life. This could be through a society, a local community project, or by bringing people together. Students can apply themselves or be nominated by a staff member or fellow student. The award will be in the region of £500.

How to apply

Submit your statement (or nomination statement), maximum 400 words, to [email protected] . Please include your name (or nominee’s name), course, and contact details. The statement should address how you or your nominee meet the criteria of being from a widening participation background and making a contribution to University life.

The University’s widening participation strategy focuses primarily on three priority target groups, those disadvantaged by either: socio-economic class, a disability, or by being from vulnerable groups e.g. care leavers or estranged students.

Applications open: Monday 15 February 2021
